How Long Does It Take to Develop a New Jewelry Box

"I have an idea for a box" is the opening of most briefs, and the least specified part of them. The idea is not the slow part. What decides the calendar is whether the design can be made, and nobody knows that until someone has drawn it properly.

This is the path from a concept to a box you can order, and the two decisions on it that move the date more than anything else.

The five stages

1. Concept. A sketch, a reference photo, a description of what the box has to do. Fast, and not yet a specification.
2. Structure. Dimensions, wall and lid proportions, how it opens, what the interior has to hold and in what arrangement, what the closure is. This is where a jewelry box stops being a picture and becomes a product — see jewelry box materials for what the interior choices cost you later.
3. Drawings and die. For any box that does not exist yet, this ends with a cutting die that has to be cut and corrected. This is the first stage with a fixed duration rather than a variable one.
4. First sample. The die's first output, in the chosen material, with the interior fitted. This is the stage that why sampling takes 15 days describes.
5. Your approval and the bulk run. Where the 45-day bulk figure starts.

The two decisions that set the calendar

Whether the shape needs its own die. A box built on an existing die can be sampled quickly; a new shape cannot, because the die has to be cut and corrected first. This is also the decision behind the 500-piece minimum for boxes — the die and the material volume are the same reason.

How much of the interior is custom. A standard insert in a standard size is off the shelf. A moulded insert for a specific ring set is a design job, and it usually runs in parallel with the shell rather than after it.

Why "I have an idea" takes longer than "I have a drawing"

Because drawings answer the questions that otherwise surface on the sample, and the sample is where they become expensive. The questions are unglamorous and always the same: what is the interior depth, how wide is the compartment, does the lid clear a tall piece when it opens, what happens to a chain in a compartment designed for a ring.

None of these are hard. All of them are cheap to answer on paper and expensive to answer on a die.

How to shorten it

• Send the interior requirement, not just the outside. "Holds six rings and a pendant chain without tangling" is more useful than a rendering.
• Say what is fixed and what can change. If the shape is licensed or the artwork is set, that is settled; if not, the design stage is still open and worth spending a week on.
• Pick the material before the sample. Changing material after the die exists usually means a new sample round, because the die was cut for a thickness.
• Approve on arrival. The one saving that costs nothing.

Where we stand

Can you build a box from my sketch?

Yes, and the sketch is the start of the structure stage rather than the brief. The questions that follow are about interior and dimensions, which is where the time goes.

Do I need a 3D file?

Not to start. You need interior requirements and overall dimensions. A 3D file if you have one is a shortcut, not a prerequisite.

How do I know whether my shape needs a new die?

Ask before you brief, at the drawing stage. Tools and minimums are the same decision, so that one question also tells you your minimum quantity — see minimums and lead times.

What if the first sample is wrong?

Then you are sampling again, and that is normal rather than a failure. It is much cheaper than discovering the problem after the die is in production.

Is developing a box more expensive than using an existing one?

Usually, because the die is yours. If you are testing a market, an existing design with your branding may be the cheaper first move and a custom shell the second.

How long should I leave for a launch plan?

Add the development stages before the sampling figure. Programmes that miss their date are usually the ones that started counting at the sample rather than at the idea.

What decides how long a new box takes?

Whether the design can be made rather than how original it is. A dieline, a tooling approval and a sample round set the calendar, and a shape that will not fold cleanly extends all three.

Can the design run alongside the tooling?

Not usefully, because the tooling is cut from the dieline. What can run in parallel is the packaging artwork and the print plates, since neither depends on the case geometry.

What should the brief contain?

The largest piece to be housed, the slot layout, the material and the packing format. Those four let a factory return one realistic dieline and calendar instead of three rounds of questions.

What this means for your order

If you are still deciding, one thing decides this for you: how much of the time is tooling rather than production, because a new box is a die job before it is a manufacturing job. Everything else on a quote page is presentation.
