Why Custom Jewelry Boxes Have a 500-Piece MOQ (and Why We Won\u2019t Sample Below It) - FSC CRAFT
One of the most common questions we get from new buyers is: “Why does a custom jewelry box need 500 pieces whenstainless steel jewelry can start at 100?” It’s a fair question, and the answer comes down to how a box is actually made versus how a piece of jewelry is made. This post explains the supply-chain math behind our 500-piece minimum per single style and single color for custom jewelry boxes and organizers — and why we won’t even take a sample order below it.
A custom box starts with a cutting die
Almost every jewelry box, tray, or travel case is cut from sheet material (velvet board, acrylic, wood, PU leather) using a custom cutting die (刀模) made for that exact shape. The die is a one-time tooling cost. Spread across 500 units, it’s a few cents per box. Spread across 50 units, it can be a large share of the unit price — often more than the materials themselves. Below a certain volume, the die cost alone makes the order uneconomic for both sides.
Raw-material suppliers sell by volume
The materials that go into a box — specialty board, foam inserts, magnets, hinges, clasps, ribbons, printing stock — are purchased from suppliers who themselves sell in volume. For a run of a few dozen boxes, we often can’t even meet the supplier’s minimum purchase, or we pay a steep small-lot premium. That resistance at the material stage is one of the main reasons a tiny box order doesn’t get made.
Workshop partners run on volume
Like our jewelry line, boxes are built through a network of specialized workshops in Dongguan Chang’an cluster, coordinated from our Shenzhen base — cutting, bonding, sewing, hardware fitting, assembly. These partners are set up for production runs, not one-off samples. A 50-piece order disrupts their line setup and they simply won’t take it. Volume is what makes the per-unit labor cost work.
Branding and printing add setup fees
Most custom boxes include a logo — hot stamping, UV print, screen print, or embossing. Each of those processes has its own plate or setup fee. On a 500-piece run that fee is negligible per unit; on a 30-piece run it can dominate the price. The 500-piece floor is where branding starts to “pay for itself.”
What “500 per single style and single color” really means
The minimum is counted per style and per color. A red version and a blue version are effectively two separate runs — different materials, different printing, sometimes different tooling. So 500 red + 500 blue means two 500-piece commitments, not 1,000 mixed freely. Standardizing on one shape and one color is the fastest way to hit the floor.
Why we don’t sample below the MOQ
Buyers sometimes ask for a “sample first, then we’ll scale.” But a sample box still triggers the die, the material minimum, and the printing setup — the same fixed costs as production. Below 500 pieces we cannot recover those costs, and any quote we gave would be a number no real production run would ever match, which would mislead you. So we set the line clearly: no sampling or prototype order below 500 pieces per style and color. It protects your budgeting as much as ours.
How to work within the 500-piece MOQ
- Standardize the shape. Use a proven dieline instead of a fully bespoke cut to reduce tooling friction.
- Pick stock materials and colors. Standard board, foam, and hardware are easier and cheaper to source than custom specs.
- Plan one color first. Launch with a single color at 500, then add colors once the design is proven.
- Need fewer than 500? Start with our ready-made jewelry organizer range and move to custom once volume justifies it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the MOQ for custom jewelry boxes?
The minimum is 500 pieces per single style and single color. Each color or version counts as its own production run.
Can I get a sample before ordering 500?
No. We do not accept sample or prototype orders below the 500-piece floor, because a sample still requires the custom die, material minimums, and printing setup. We’d rather give you an honest production quote than a misleading sample price.
Why is the box MOQ higher than stainless steel jewelry’s?
Jewelry is produced from existing wire, chain, and casting infrastructure with low fixed tooling. Boxes need a custom cutting die, volume-based materials, and printing setup for every order — fixed costs that only make sense at volume. For buyers evaluating a custom jewelry organizer factory, our process covers tooling, cutting, assembly and QC under one roof.
Do different colors count as separate MOQs?
Yes. A red box and a blue box are two separate 500-piece commitments, because they involve different materials and printing.
