Two common gilding techniques for stainless steel jewelry

Published by FSC CRAFT

Plating is what turns a plain 316L Stainless Steel blank into a finished, color-rich piece of jewelry. Among the techniques used in OEM stainless steel jewelry production, two dominate the workshop floor: PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) and traditional electroplating, often called “water plating”. Understanding the difference helps buyers specify the right finish for durability, color, and budget.

What is PVD coating?

PVD is a vacuum-based process. The jewelry is placed in a chamber where a target metal (such as titanium, zirconium, or chromium) is vaporized and deposited atom-by-atom onto the surface. The result is an extremely thin, dense, and bonded layer. PVD finishes are renowned for scratch resistance, color stability, and hypoallergenic properties. Gold-tone, rose-gold, and black PVD are the most requested colors for wholesale stainless steel rings and bracelets.

What is traditional electroplating?

Electroplating immerses the part in a chemical bath and uses an electric current to deposit a metal layer (usually a thin gold or rhodium layer) onto the stainless steel. It is faster and cheaper per piece, which makes it attractive for large promotional runs. The trade-off is lower abrasion resistance: the plating can wear through at high-friction points over time.

Which should you specify?

For everyday-wear fashion jewelry and pieces that must survive shipping and handling, PVD is the safer long-term choice. For short-life promotional items or when the exact precious-metal look is secondary, electroplating keeps unit cost down. At FSC CRAFT we default to PVD for most 316L stainless steel jewelry lines and reserve electroplating for clearly budget-driven programs.

Want the technical baseline behind the metal itself? See our guide on 316L vs 304 stainless steel jewelry, or review how stainless steel jewelry is made from blank to finished piece.

The practical difference is durability. Electroplating lays a thin decorative layer that can wear at friction points; PVD (vacuum plating) bonds a harder, more even coating that resists sweat and daily rub far better. For everyday steel jewelry, PVD in gold, rose-gold or black is the safer default. FSC CRAFT runs both and ships samples so buyers can compare wear before committing a style.

See the PVD process or ask about MOQ (100 pieces per style).
